Joe Carter Blasts Highlight Willie Wilson Legends Showdown

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – At one time the crew that took the field in front of 4,767 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark Saturday night were the prime athletes of baseball.  Diamond legends like Joe Carter (pictured), Bert Campaneris, John Mayberry, Amos Otis, Frank White and Ozzie Smith all joined former Royals outfielder Willie Wilson in his annual charity legends game.

Pitching dominated the game with legendary hurlers J.R. Richard and Al Fitzmorris starting the games for their respected crews and ex-major leaguers Steve Trout and Ron Robertson relieving them.  Players were divided into two teams, one representing Providence Health and the other representing the promotion of Ethanol.

Carter was victorious in the pregame homerun derby versus T-Bones Senior Director of Tickets Brandon Smith and his power carried over into his first at-bat as he crushed a homer to deep left off Fitzmorris, putting Ethanol up 1-0.

Providence bounced back in the bottom of the fourth as Mayberry blooped an RBI single that landed just fair down the left-field foul line.  Former Royals infielder Greg Pryor then doubled, scoring White who reached on a single.  Providence added a run in the fifth as Grandview Fire Chief Chuck Thacker doubled in a run.

Carter again brought the offense for Ethanol, hitting his second solo homer of the game in the sixth.  That would be the last run of the game as Ethanol fell to Providence 3-2.
