T-Bones Can't Rally Against Goldeye Pitching

07/31/2003 11:32 AM - Kansas City fell to the Goldeyes again last night with a score of 2-0. Pitcher Tony Bacci only allowed two Runs, but the offense couldn’t get on the board to challenge Winnipeg.

Harry Berrios drove in the only run Brad Purcell would need in the bottom of one. With Jalal Leach on first after drawing a two-out walk, Berrios drilled the first pitch from Tony Bacci to right centre to score Leach.

It stayed 1-0 until the sixth when Berrios and Greg Morrison hit consecutive singles. Rusty Keith then flew out to right, allowing Berrios to tag up and go to third. With Kris Cox up, Bacci was called for a balk, moving Morrison up to second and bringing Berrios home to conclude the scoring.

Meanwhile, Brad Purcell was keeping the T-Bones at bay, not allowing a runner past second through six. He ran into trouble in the seventh, though, allowing two walks and a single to load the bases with none out before giving way to Heath McMurray.

Wasting little time, McMurray left them loaded with two strikeouts and a ground out. A trio of relievers succeeded him, allowing just one hit and one walk the rest of the way. Rodney Dickinson struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his eleventh save. Purcell improved to 6-2 while Bacci, despite going the distance, fell to 4-6.

These same two teams conclude this series tomorrow at 12 noon for a Weekday Matinee. Rafael Gross (9-1) will pitch for Winnipeg while Jon McDonald (1-2) will pitch for the T-Bones. The T-Bones look to regain their first place seat in the Western Division, now that they have fallen one game behind Fargo.
