04/20/2007 12:14 PM - KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas City T-Bones of the independent Northern League announced today the signing of former Major League infielder Donaldo Mendez. He played in 72 games at the Major League level for the San Diego Padres. Mendez, 28, has played professionally since 1996. He was originally signed by the Houston Astros as an undrafted free agent in November of 1995. He has since played for four other Major League organizations: the Padres, Pirates, Giants and Twins.

“Having the luxury of Geoff McCallum the last couple of years, with him making the Marlins, we were really looking for a good defensive short stop and Donaldo fit the bill,” said T-Bones manager Andy McCauley. “Having spent time in the big leagues with the Padres and last year in Triple-A, he brings a lot of experience to the team. He will probably hit in the middle of the lineup.”

Mendez hit .183 in 202 Major League at bats with three home runs and 14 RBIs. In his minor league career he holds a .235 average with 30 home runs and 206 runs batted in.

Choice Cuts:
The T-Bones also announced that the rights have been purchased for infielder Neb Brown from the Shreveport Sports of the American Association. Brown has played second base primarily though his career. Brown has hit .266 for his career in 468 career minor league games. McCauley said Brown will likely play second or third base.

McCauley has also announced the signing of Russell Rapp and Casey Clary. Both players were signed from the Northern League tryout camp in Florida. Rapp will be vying for a spot as a utility player while Clary will try to make the team as a catcher.
