T-Bones Fall 6-3

07/21/2003 11:25 AM - The T-Bones could not hold on to an early 3-0 lead as the Flyers found ways to score runs in the clutch. Schaumburg (6-3, 31-22) has now won five of their last six games.

Dave Therneau started Sunday’s ballgame looking for his first win as a Flyer. He was a little shaky out of the gate as he gave up an RBI-single to Eddie Pearson in the first and an RBI-single to Bao Vinh in the second. The T-Bones (6-3, 26-28) pushed across another run in the second when Brant Brown misplayed a ball in left field, allowing Vinh to score.

But the Flyers answered right back in the bottom half of the second. The T-Bones gave Schaumburg a gift when T.J. Staton’s lead-off pop-fly was dropped by Vinh. Kirk Pierce followed with a double and, one batter later, B.J. Garrison singled up the middle, scoring Staton and Pierce. Therneau kept the game close and, in the bottom of the sixth, the Flyers were able to tie the game at three. Brant Brown hit a clutch two-out RBI-single to center, scoring Mario Delgado who had led off the frame with a double.

Brett Weber was called upon in relief and kept the T-Bones at bay. He kept things at 3-3 until the bottom of the eighth when Pierce smashed a three-run homer off of reliever Nathan Sevier over the wall in right-center. The home run drove in Rudy Gomez and Delgado. Gomez led off the frame with a double and Delgado followed with a walk. In the top of the ninth, Weber retired the first two hitters on strikeouts before surrendering a double to Vinh and a walk to Mark Teson. But the right-hander got Taber Maier to strike out looking to end the game. The win was Weber’s third of the season (3-1). T-Bone starter Jon McDonald (0-1) was saddled with the loss.

The T-Bones will now enjoy a span of three days where they have no games. The 2003 Northern League All-Star Game is scheduled to take place on July 22 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The club will resume play on Thursday when Lincoln comes to town for a four-game set.

NOTES: Kansas City right-fielder Chris LePine and second baseman Bao Vinh collided near the right-field foul line in the eighth inning on what ended up being a triple by Brant Brown … Mark Teson came in as a substitute for LePine following the incident … Rick Prieto and D.J. Johnson will be in Lincoln, NE for the 2003 N.L. All-Star Game.
