08/31/2006 12:48 AM - JOLIET, Ill. – J.D. Foust’s infield single with two-out in the ninth inning drove home the go-ahead run, and Hank Woodman (pictured) turned in a complete-game shutout in a 1-0 victory in the nightcap of the Kansas City T-Bones’ (45-46, 23-20) double-header split with the Joliet JackHammers (39-53, 23-21) Wednesday evening at Silver Cross Field.

The decisive ninth inning started with a Greg Jacobs single to left field off reliever Victor Kleine (4-3), who then got Robbie Knapp to pop up a sacrifice-bunt attempt for the first out of the frame. Jacobs then stole second base and advanced to third on Craig Hurba's fly-out to center following a walk to Pat Magness. Foust then bounced a ball to the right side of the infield that second baseman Blake Gill corralled and threw to first base. But first base umpire Scott Wadas ruled the throw pulled Chad Ehrnsberger off the bag, allowing Jacobs to come home with the go-ahead run. Joliet closer Amad Stephens and manager Hal Lanier objected vehemently to the call and were subsequently ejected from the game.

That would be all the offense Woodman would need, as the veteran right-hander worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to wrap up a 140-pitch complete-game victory, ensuring the double-header split and vaulting the T-Bones back on top of the East Division standings, just a half-game ahead of Joliet with five regular season games remaining.

In a game originally slated for just seven innings, Woodman and Joliet starter Matt Smith were in control for most of the contest. The T-Bones mustered just one hit through the game's first eight innings, but Woodman worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the second and a two-on, two-out situation in the third inning to preserve the scoreless tie.

Shortstop Chad Sosebee also played a pivotal role in saving the game and, perhaps, ultimately the season. With two men out in the seventh and the winning run on third base, Jose Amado hit a ball into the hole that Sosebee, diving to his right, nabbed and relayed to first to end the scoring threat and send the game to extra innings.

Woodman (5-4), who allowed just seven hits while striking out six batters, retired the final nine JackHammers of the game and has now posted 16 straight scoreless innings over his last two starts after blanking Gary SouthShore for seven innings in a 14-3 win on August 26th.

For the night, the T-Bones' lineup posted just two runs on nine hits, as Joliet scored five times in the fourth inning of game one and cruised to a 5-1 win behind the pitching of Eddie Oropesa. Greg Stevens put Joliet on the board with an RBI-groundout, and Mike Goss, John Lackaff, Jose Amado and Rob Stratton delivered RBI-singles to give Oropesa all the support he would need.

Oropesa (2-0) scattered six hits and permitted just one run on Jacobs' fifth-inning ground-out to pick up the victory. The veteran left-hander struck out six and walked three in the complete-game effort.

Jonathan Krysa (13-4) suffered the loss for Kansas City, ending a streak of five straight wins in August for the Lee's Summit native.

Next up, the T-Bones and JackHammers will wrap up their three-game set Thursday evening with a 7:05 p.m. contest. Game Notes: Wednesday's 1-0 win in game two of the double-header was just the second victory for the T-Bones in their last 10 road games...The victory was the 11 th complete game and fourth shutout of Hank Woodman's professional career…The T-Bones will look to clinch the season-series with the JackHammers Thursday; KC holds a one-game edge thus far with 10 wins in 19 contests with Joliet in 2006.
