T-Bones Finish Sweep with 6-4 Win

08/24/2006 10:57 PM - KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas City T-Bones (42-45, 20-19) completed a three-game sweep of the Schaumburg Flyers (43-43, 12-26) with a 6-4 win Thursday evening before a crowd of 5,748 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. With the victory the T-Bones moved into a first-place tie with idle Joliet in the East Division pennant race with just nine regular-season games remaining.

Kansas City once again used the big inning and quality pitching to send the Flyers to their club-record 12th consecutive loss. After scoring seven of their nine runs Wednesday in just two innings, the T-Bones struck big again with a key three-run fourth to erase a 3-1 deficit Thursday. Zach Norman and Greg Jacobs each turned in run-scoring singles in the frame to even the score before a Rick DeHart wild pitch brought Norman home with the go-ahead run.

Kansas City’s bullpen also played a critical role in the win, as Lavon Lewis worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning to preserve a 4-3 lead. Moments later, Doug Dreher’s sacrifice fly scored Chad Sosebee, and Jacobs delivered his second RBI-single of the contest to give the T-Bones some much-needed breathing room in the bottom half of the eighth.

James Morrison surrendered a ninth-inning homer to Chris Weekly before getting Josue Lopez to ground into a fielder’s choice to wrap up his sixth save of the season.

While the T-Bones showed an unmistakable propensity for scoring late in the three-game series, they also plated the first run of the game Thursday for the third straight night. With two out in the third, Pat Magness gave the T-Bones the lead when he deposited a DeHart offering over the left-field wall for a 1-0 advantage.

Eric Cole reached base on a Robbie Knapp fielding error to lead-off the fourth, and Josue Lopez followed with a single to set up the Flyers first true scoring threat of the game. Justin Hendrickson then belted a three-run homer off T-Bones’ starter Larry Robles (pictured) to give Schaumburg their only lead of the night.

The T-Bones received another standout performance from their starting pitcher, as Robles (5-5) fanned six hitters and allowed just three runs (two earned) on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings to earn the win.

DeHart (5-5) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits over his six innings of work.

The T-Bones will welcome the Gary SouthShore RailCats to CommunityAmerica Ballpark Friday to kick off the final home series of the season. RHP Greg Bicknell (7-12, 4.10) will face Gary RHP Travis Kerber (3-5, 3.08) in game one of the critical three-game set.

Game Notes: Greg Jacobs led the T-Bones offense Thursday, going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI...Charles Peterson also added three hits in five trips to the plate...Chris Weekly's ninth-inning homer Thursday was the lone run scored against the KC bullpen in 6 1/3 innings during the three-game series.
