Goldeyes Finish Sweep of T-Bones with 9-6 Win

08/20/2006 5:40 PM - WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (44-39, 17-18) scored five times in the first inning and never looked back in taking a 9-6 victory to complete a three-game sweep of the Kansas City T-Bones (39-45, 17-19) Sunday afternoon at CanWest Global Park.

Fehlandt Lentini, who went 4-for-4 in the Goldeyes’ 6-2 win Saturday, got the ball rolling in the first with a lead-off homer off T-Bones’ starter Greg Bicknell. Following a Jimmy Hurst single and a walk to David Gates, Will Smith’s two-run double gave the Goldeyes a three-run lead. Matt Mann and Corey Stang delivered RBI-doubles to cap the scoring and give Winnipeg a 5-0 advantage after just one inning of play.

The T-Bones took advantage of a couple of miscues by Winnipeg second baseman Ryan Hamilton to climb right back into the game in the second inning. Darryl Lawhorn singled with one out to start the rally, then advanced to third on a Chad Sosebee grounder that found its way through Hamilton’s legs. Hamilton next misplayed a grounder hit by Robbie Knapp to allow Lawhorn to come home and cut the margin to 5-1. After Zach Norman struck out, Doug Dreher came through with a two-out, two-run double off Winnipeg starter Kenny Chenard to bring the T-Bones to within two runs.

The Goldeyes added a run in the third on Mann’s home run, and plated two more in the fourth when Lentini tripled for the 12th time in 2006 to tie J.D. Foust’s single-season league record, then scored when Hurst clubbed his 17th homer of the season to make it an 8-3 ballgame.

Mann delivered his third run-scoring hit of the game in the seventh on a single that drove home Gates to extend the lead to 9-3, while Greg Jacobs and Charles Peterson each drove in runs in the T-Bones' three-run ninth to provide the final margin.

Chenard (2-2) picked up the win for Winnipeg, allowing just three unearned runs on three hits in his five innings of work. Josh Kite earned his second save of the series and seventh overall by striking out Pat Magness to end the game.

Bicknell (7-12) suffered the defeat for Kansas City after giving up eight runs in four innings. With the setback, Bicknell matched the Northern League's record for losses in a single season, established last year by fellow T-Bone hurler Jonathan Krysa and Gary's Jason Shelley.

The T-Bones return to CommunityAmerica Ballpark Tuesday to kick off the final homestand of the regular season with a 7:05 p.m. contest against the Schaumburg Flyers. After a three-game set with the Flyers, the Gary SouthShore RailCats will pay the T-Bones a visit next weekend to wrap up the home portion of the schedule.

Game Notes: With Sunday’s loss the T-Bones fell two games back of Joliet’s lead in the East Division pennant race, pending the outcome of the JackHammers’ game with Gary.
