Krysa Rights Ship with Complete-Game, 5-2 Victory

08/17/2006 11:58 PM - CALGARY – After dropping their last three games and falling a half-game behind Joliet in the East Division pennant race, the Kansas City T-Bones (39-42, 17-16) got a complete-game effort from Jonathan Krysa to top the Calgary Vipers (32-48, 13-19) by a 5-2 score Thursday evening at Foothills Stadium.

Krysa (12-3) held the Vipers in check most of the night, giving up just two runs on eight hits in his second complete-game of the season- a 138-pitch effort in which the Rockhurst product struck out nine batters.

But the situation looked bleak for Krysa and the T-Bones early, as Calgary scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI-groundout from Aaron McEachran and Sharnol Adriana’s base-hit to right field to take a 2-0 lead.

Kansas City struck back in the top of the second, plating a run on Doug Dreher’s fielder’s choice ground-out to cut the margin in half.

Darryl Lawhorn gave the T-Bones the lead for good with one out in the third. Following a Zach Norman walk, Lawhorn blasted a Tom Lyons offering over the center field wall to stake Krysa to a one-run lead.

The T-Bones added some insurance in the fifth on Robbie Knapp’s RBI-single and a Pat Magness sacrifice-fly to extend the lead to 5-2, which would be more than enough for Krysa to finish the job and pick up his Northern League-best 12th victory of the season.

After Carlos Duncan hit into a momentum-shifting double-play to end the Vipers scoring threat in the first, Calgary struggled to find scoring opportunities against Kansas City’s all-time strikeout leader. The Vipers sent the tying run to the plate in both the seventh and ninth innings, but each time Krysa got a key strikeout to extinguish the threat.

Lyons (0-6) took the loss for Calgary after allowing five runs (three earned) in 4 1/3 innings of work.

The T-Bones will begin a three-game series in Winnipeg with a 7:05 p.m. contest Friday. LHP Buddy Blair (4-7, 6.06) will oppose an as yet undetermined Winnipeg hurler. Be sure to catch all the action live on “The Light” 1030 AM, or on the internet at tbonesbaseball.com.
