T-Bones go deep for fifth straight win

08/08/2006 10:06 PM - JOLIET, Ill. - Greg Jacobs second home run of the night proved to be the game-winner Tuesday evening at Silver Cross Field, as the Kansas City T-Bones (36-37, 14-11) posted their fifth straight win with a 5-4 victory over the Joliet JackHammers (27-44, 11-12).

With the game tied 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning, Jacobs belted his 14th home run of the season- a solo shot to right field off Joliet righthander Derell McCall- to put the T-Bones ahead for good. Jonathan Krysa (10-3) made the lead stand, with the help of his bullpen, extending Kansas City's advantage in the East Division standings to two games.

Afer falling behind 1-0 on a Chris Brown sacrifice-fly in the second inning, the T-Bones got into the scoring act in a big way in the top of the third. With one man out, J.D. Foust singled off McCall and Jacobs followed with the first of his two long-balls to give Kansas City a 2-1 lead. After a Charles Peterson base-on-balls, Eddie Pearson delivered a two-run shot of his own and, just like that, the T-Bones held a 4-1 advantage.

Joliet responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning, as Rob Stratton blasted a three-run homer to left to draw the JackHammers even at 4-4.

Krysa turned in another outstanding effort, completing 8 1/3 innings and coaxing double-plays to squelch Joliet scoring threats in the fourth and seventh innings to earn his Northern League-leading 10th win of the season. The Rockhurst product also established a new personal career high for wins in a season, surpassing his previous best when he went 9-7 for the T-Bones in 2004.

The Kansas City bullpen also came through when it mattered most. After relieving Krysa with one out in the ninth, Buddy Blair notched a huge out when he fanned Mike Goss with the tying run on second base. James Morrison then came on to record the final out by getting Jose Amado to ground into a fielder's choice.

McCall (3-3) suffered the loss for Joliet after allowing five runs on seven hits in his 6 2/3 innings of work.

Game three of the series is set for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. The T-Bones will send the Northern League's reigning pitcher of the week, RHP Larry Robles (4-3, 2.72) to the mound to oppose Joliet righthander Matt Smith (2-2, 6.04).
