T-Bones Score Two in the Ninth to Win 8-7

07/12/2003 11:17 AM - It looked as though the Kansas City T-Bones would suffer another tough defeat with Tony Bacci on the mound. Luckily for the T-Bones, Chad Shindle sent a two-out pitch from Steve Montgomery into center that scored Eddie Pearson and Rick Prieto to give the T-Bones the exciting 8-7 victory in the bottom of the ninth inning.

In his previous start at Sioux Falls, Bacci pitched nine innings while allowing only two runs. The game went into extra innings where the T-Bones would fall 3-2. Tonight, Bacci managed to pitch into the seventh, but he surrendered a season high five runs.

The T-Bones went into the seventh with a 5-3 lead when Ed Gerald stepped up to the plate. He sent Bacci’s 2-2 pitch just over the right field wall for his third homer of the season. After Bacci surrendered a walk to Brad Mazer, manager Al Gallagher elected to bring in Nate Sevier.

Sevier would struggle in relief as he failed to get an out. He allowed singles to Brian Sprout and Ruben Salazar, and a double to Jon Weber before being removed in favor of newcomer Jason Davis. Davis surrendered a single to Brian Ward that capped the scoring on a four-run inning for the Redhawks. The T-Bones left the inning trailing 7-5.

After a scoreless eighth, the T-Bones came to bat in the bottom of the ninth still trailing by two. Fargo brought in their closer Steve Montgomery, who recorded his eighth save the night before. Kansas City opened the inning with three consecutive singles by Taber Maier, Eddie Pearson, and Rick Prieto. Prieto’s single scored Maier to close the gap to within one run.

After a fly out and a strike out, the T-Bones were left with runners on first and second and two outs. Sean Murphy walked on four pitches to bring up Chad Shindle with the bases loaded. Shindle, who tied the game with a home run June 10 at Sioux Falls, came through in the clutch once again. His single off of Montgomery (2-2) to center brought home the tying and winning runs, giving the T-Bones their first victory in five tries against Fargo.

D.J. Johnson (4-1) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning for his fourth win of the season.

The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow evening at 5:05 p.m. Jayson Sigley will start for the T-Bones and will be matched by Derek Dormanen for the Redhawks.
