06/11/2006 8:38 PM - KANSAS CITY – The Kansas City T-Bones (9-14) let victory slip through their fingertips for the second time in three days Sunday before a crowd of 5,170 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The visiting Gary Southshore RailCats (9-14) capitalized on four T-Bones errors to claim the rubber match of the three-game series, 6-5.

Gary Southshore took a first-inning 1-0 lead for the second straight day when Nathan Haynes came home on a Brad Vericker two-out single to center field. The T-Bones once again responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning, as Charles Peterson singled off RailCats starter Jason Shelley to drive in Blake Whealy. Pat Magness, who drove home four runs in Kansas City’s 24-1 win on Saturday, then put the home team in front 2-1 with a sacrifice fly to right field.

After the RailCats evened the score with an unearned run off T-Bones’ hurler Jonathan Krysa in the second, Kansas City took advantage of three two-out walks issued by Shelley in the bottom of the third to regain a one-run advantage.

It was Gary Southshore’s turn to take the lead in the fifth when Steve Haake singled to start the inning and Jermaine Allensworth blasted a Krysa delivery over the left-field wall to put the RailCats on top, 4-3. Chad Sosebee came through for the T-Bones in the bottom half of the inning with a clutch two-out, two-run double that scored Magness and Craig Hurba to take the lead right back from the visitors.

Krysa held the RailCats in check for 7 1/3 innings, allowing just three earned runs on nine hits and appeared to be in line for his fourth win of the season. The situation deteriorated abruptly in the ninth for closer Byron Embry, as two costly errors and a Haake double handed Gary Southshore a 6-5 advantage.

Travis Kerber allowed a two-out Eddie Pearson single in the bottom of the ninth before getting Magness on a ground-out to earn his third save. Steve Edsall completed two perfect innings to earn his first win, while Embry (1-2) suffered his second loss of the series.

Game Notes: Jonathan Krysa tied Jeremy McGarity’s nine-year-old franchise strikeout record when he fanned Chris Curry in the third inning for his 326th career punchout as a T-Bone…Charles Peterson’s first-inning single was his sixth consecutive hit and extended his current hitting streak to 13 games. Peterson went 5-for-6 on Saturday, recording hits in each of his last five plate appearances…With the loss the T-Bones concluded their nine-game homestand with a 4-5 record.
