Goldeyes Salvage Split with 14-7 Win over T-Bones

06/01/2006 5:21 PM - WINNIPEG – The Kansas City T-Bones (5-9) lost the finale of their series with the Winnipeg Goldeyes (8-5), 14-7, in a slugfest that took three hours and 12 minutes. The T-Bones got off to a slow start in front of a sellout crowd, the first of the season for the Goldeyes.

T-Bones starter Buddy Blair hit rough waters early on, allowing four runs in the bottom of the first inning, including a three-run homer by Harry Berrios. The T-Bones fought back during the top of the second with their own three-run homer by Brandon Jones, making it a one-run game. But a single to center by the Goldeyes’ Jimmy Hurst in the bottom of the second scored two more runs for Winnipeg and chased Blair from the game, setting the score at 6-3 after two innings.

After another run for Winnipeg in the bottom of the third against T-Bone reliever David Viane, things started looking up for the T-Bones. In the top of the fourth, Michael Spidale’s single to right field with three men on base resulted in two runs, scoring Craig Hurba and Brandon Jones. A Greg Jacobs double two batters later drove in Spidale and Chad Sosebee, tying the game at 7-all before the fifth inning.

Unfortunately, the Goldeyes’ performance in the bottom of the fifth inning allowed them to pull way ahead. Winnipeg scored seven runs in the fifth, including two homeruns by Fehlandt Lentini and Jimmy Hurst against T-Bone reliever James Morrison. No players scored following the fifth inning, sealing a Winnipeg victory.

Game Notes: The Kansas City T-Bones used five of their pitchers during the game, with Viane hurling a team-high 2 2/3 innings pitched… three pitchers threw just one inning, including Ryan Tauscher, who worked a scoreless eighth… Winnipeg’s Jon Benick was ejected from the game during the first inning after arguing a called third strike.
