KANSAS CITY, Kan. –The Kansas City T-Bones announced that the club has traded right-handed pitcher Gabe Perez to the Gary SouthShore RailCats for RHP Jake Matthys.

Jake Matthys a 23-year-old right-hander who was a big find for the Gary SouthShore RailCats last year in his first professional season. The native of Spring Lake Park, Minnesota went 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 32.2 innings of work. He made one spot start and struck out 31 while walking only seven. He faced the T-Bones on August 18th, working two innings of scoreless relief in an 8-1 win for Gary.

Matthys made three stops in his college career, beginning at Kansas State University in 2013. He posted a 2.05 ERA with nine saves in 34 games and was named the first Big 12 Freshman of the Year for the Wildcats baseball program. He added First Team All-Conference and a Freshman All-American selection by Baseball America to his resume that season. His 9-3 record set a program record for wins in a season and also set Freshman records for relief appearances and saves by a Wildcat rookie.

After his Sophomore season, Matthys would transfer to Southwest Minnesota State and would later move on to Division II power Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas the following season. For the Rams, he appeared in 19 games, making four starts with a 4.45 ERA in 58.2 innings and adding 40 strike outs during the 2017 season.

He would work 107 innings for the T-Bones with a 4.63 ERA and a career high 114 strike outs. Perez was originally signed by the Los Angeles Angels back in January of 2009 as an amateur free agent. After two years with the Angels, Perez signed with the New Jersey Jackals of the CAN-AM League. The Arizona Diamondbacks purchased the contract Perez from the New Jersey Jackals in August of 2014. He returned to New Jersey in 2015 and went 8-4 in 18 starts with a 2.90 ERA. In 2016 Perez pitched for Laredo in the American Association going 1-1 in 8 games with a 4.22 ERA.
