WAVERLY, Neb. – The Lincoln Saltdogs beat the Kansas City T-Bones 5-1 Friday night at Lawson Park in Nebraska, dropping the T-Bones to 3-1 in the exhibition season.

Lincoln took the early lead with Cesar Valera doubling with one out to start the home half of the first inning. Christian Ibarra followed with an RBI single off Kansas City starter Calvin Drummond, and the early score was 1-0.

The Saltdogs then added another run in the second with a leadoff double for Randolph Oduber. Then with one out, Oduber moved over to third on a wild pitch from Drummond. Ivan Marin rolled a ground ball fielder’s choice to second to score Oduber from third, giving Lincoln a 2-0 lead through two innings.

Drummond settled down and kept the Saltdogs off the board in the third inning and would hand the ball over to righty Chris Perry in the bottom of the fourth for the T-Bones.  Perry would work back-to-back 1-2-3 frames for Kansas City, retiring the first eight batters he faced until Randolph Oduber doubled in the bottom of the sixth. Perry would finish the night with three scoreless innings for Kansas City.

Lincoln got a solid start from Bennett Parry, who worked four scoreless innings, allowing three hits with a walk and five strike outs. The T-Bones managed to break through in the sixth when Lincoln reliever Josh Laxer issued a leadoff walk to Omar Garcia. With one out, Donald Lutz doubled to left center field to score Garcia and the lead was cut in half at 2-1. The run scored by Kansas City ended a 14 2/3rds inning scoreless streak for the Lincoln Saltdogs in the preseason.

Chris McCoy took over for Perry in the seventh and surrendered a double to Ivan Marin and hit the next batter Chris Garia. Marin stole third to put runners at the corners with Cesar Valera at the plate. Valera reached on an infield single to score Marin and moved Garia over to second and Lincoln was in front 3-1. McCoy then issued a wild pitch to move the runners up to second and third with no outs. Then Christian Ibarra singled to make it 4-1, scoring Garia from third. McCoy forced Curt Smith to ground into a double play, but scoring a run made the score 5-1.

The T-Bones would threaten in the top of the eighth. Derek Gordon took over for Lincoln on the mound and gave up a leadoff single to Eddie Newton. Brett Wiley then followed with a double, and Kevin Keyes worked a walk off of Gordon to load the bases for pinch hitter Jordan Edgerton. Gordon struck out Edgerton and forced a fielder choice from the bat of Chase McDonald, forcing out Keyes at second base, and the game stayed 5-1.

The T-Bones were retired in order in the top of the ninth, making the final 5-1. The teams played the bottom of the ninth inning to allow both teams to get some extra work in the game. Omar Garcia continued a strong spring with his third multi-hit game in the first four exhibition games, going 2-for-2 with a stolen base and a walk.
