06/13/2003 9:55 AM - Strong pitching and timely hitting lead to the T-Bones first double header sweep at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Eddie Pearson and Sean Murphy walked out of the stadium as heroes as each collected game winning hits. Eddie’s homerun won the first game 3-2 in the 14th inning and Sean’s single in the 7th won the second game 5-4. Both walk-off hits came with two outs.

The first game was a continuation from the rain suspended game last night. When the two teams picked up from where they left off, Winnipeg led 2-0. That’s when Jayson Sigley and the rest of the T-Bones bullpen took it upon themselves to ensure that their three game losing streak would become a distant memory. The bullpen turned in its best performance of the year by going ten innings without giving up a single run. Sigley pitched four innings, Tony Gomes pitched two-thirds of an inning, and David Johnson (1-1) pitched the final four and one-third innings earning his first win of the season.

The T-Bones had many opportunities to win the first game of the double header. Twice they left the winning run on third base with less than two outs. However, Eddie Pearson chose to take matters into his own hands as he lifted Graham Mazur’s (0-1) pitch into the Kansas City evening. The hit broke Pearson’s 2-19 slump since joining the T-Bones. His winning run would not have been possible without Ray Brown’s two out single to tie the game in the ninth.

The shortened second game saw more of the same from the T-Bones offense. By the end of the fourth inning, Kansas City had more errors (three) than hits (two). That combination was the cause for the 4-0 hole in which the T-Bones found themselves. The fifth changed the tone of the game as Jack Jones led off with a single. After Chris LePine followed with an infield single, Rick Prieto hit his second homerun of the season into the right field lawn area. The T-Bones tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Sean Murphy’s single scored pinch runner Bao Vinh.

Murphy was not done after his game-tying single in the sixth. Rick Prieto reached on a lead-off walk to begin the final inning. After a Taber Maier sacrifice, Ray Brown was intentionally walked. Chad Ehrnsberger’s potentially game winning single was knocked down by third baseman Jeremy Smith to temporarily extend the game one more batter, that batter was Sean Murphy. He ripped the second pitch into center field and sent Prieto home with the winning run.

Tony Bacci (2-2) recorded his first game of the season as he pitched seven innings allowing the four runs, only three of which were earned. Joey Cramblitt (1-2) took the complete game loss. The T-Bones look for the series sweep in a win tomorrow night. A win tomorrow would also ensure that the T-Bones’ first homestand was a winning homestand. Saturday’s game starts at 7:05pm, and Nate Sevier is on the mound for the T-Bones against Heath McMurray for the Goldeyes.
