Late rally not enough for Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – An early eight-run deficit was too much for Kansas City to overcome in the late innings Saturday night as the T-Bones fell 10-9 in front of 6,103 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Kansas City’s starting pitcher Jordan Cooper (2-1) struggled for the first time this season, as he gave up two three-run home runs in the first three innings — the first off the bat of Josh Mazzola in the first inning and then to Brian Humphries in the third. The RedHawks scored an additional run in each of those innings for an 8-0 lead, which seemed to be good enough for starter Cody Scarpetta (2-0).

After each team scored two runs in the next two half-innings, Fargo-Moorhead held a 10-2 lead until the T-Bones showed new life in the sixth. Kansas City sent eight to the plate in both the sixth and seventh innings, rallying for five runs against Fargo relievers Dan Sattler and Will Mathis, and cutting the RedHawks’ lead to 10-7.

In the sixth, Sattler walked Robby Kuzdale. After Kuzdale advanced to second on a wild pitch, he scored on a single by Dalton Wheat. Tyler Moore and Vladimir Frias each singled to right field, which scored Wheat and brought the score to 10-4.

Then, with two outs in the seventh, the T-Bones started another rally. Sattler walked Brett Wiley, gave up a single to Wheat and then walked Moore. With the bases loaded, Starlin Rodriguez sent a two-run single to left. The RedHawks turned to Mathis, who gave up an RBI single to Vladimir Frias, one of his four hits in the game.

The T-Bones made the game interesting by putting together another two-out rally in the ninth. With Wiley on first after a walk, Rodriguez launched a two-run home run to left that brought the score to 10-9. Frias walked before Tyler Massey lined a base hit to right. Frias went to third on the hit, as Massey went to second on the throw. With two outs, however, Anthony Asalon popped out to the catcher, ending the game.

The T-Bones (15-21) will continue to play host to the Fargo-Moorhead (19-15) on Sunday afternoon at 1:05. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 913-328-5618.
