LAREDO, Texas – Laredo starter Matt Sergey threw six shutout innings and silenced Kansas City’s bats in a 9-1 Lemur win Saturday night at Uni-Trade Stadium.

Sergey (3-0) continued his season-long tear by striking out seven Kansas City batters and walking only one. Starlin Rodriguez was the only T-Bones batter to have any luck against Sergey, picking up two hits.

The Lemurs bats provided plenty of run support for Sergey. Dennis Phipps led off the second inning by smashing a home run to left field, his sixth of the season, off Kansas City starter Sean Furney. He was followed by back-to-back singles from Zane Chavez and Abel Nieves. After Ty Morrison reached on a throwing error by Vladimir Frias, Jesus Posso brought home Chavez with a single. Two consecutive groundouts to third base scored Nieves and Morrison, giving the Lemurs a 4-0 lead in the second.

Laredo kept going in the third. Thanks to two Furney walks and a base hit by Chavez, the Lemurs once again loaded the bases. Ty Morrison brought one run home on a sacrifice fly to center field. Posso hit another RBI single for the second consecutive inning that gave the Lemurs a 6-0 lead after three innings against Furney.

The Lemurs added another run in the fourth, going up 7-0 and chasing Furney (3-2). When it was all said and done, Furney gave up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and he walked three. Reliever Johnny Shuttlesworth gave up two runs in two innings, before Evan DeLuca and Aaron Baker each threw a hitless and scoreless inning.

Kansas City attempted to rally late against Scott Garner in the ninth inning. Brandon Tierney hit a double to left field. Brett Wiley followed with a double that scored Tierney, and avoided the shutout.

With this fourth consecutive loss, Kansas City (11-17) concludes this six-game road trip Sunday night at Laredo at 7:05. All of the action can be heard at TBonesBaseball.com.
