Pierce Lifts Flyers to 5-2 Win; Series Tied at 1 Apiece

09/09/2004 1:43 PM - A three-run home run by Kirk Pierce in the bottom of the eighth inning against T-Bones starter Jonathan Krysa (L) gave the Schaumburg Flyers their first lead in the series, and the Flyers held on for a 5-2 win over the T-Bones in front of 1,125 at Alexian Field in Schaumburg, IL.

The T-Bones took lead of 1-0 and 2-1 in the second and fifth innings on solo home runs by Cody Nowlin, the first time this season Nowlin has had two home runs in a game. Schaumburg kept coming back, however, getting a run in the second inning on a Justin Hendrickson infield single and tying it up in the seventh on an Eric Cole single to right.

Matt Bailie (W) started on the hill for the Flyers and pitched a gem, allowing just two runs on three hits to Kansas City in his eight innings of work.

Schaumburg got their first run in the bottom of the second when, with runners on first and second, Cole popped up a bunt that Krysa fielded on the fly. T.J. Staton had ventured off the bag a little too far and Krysa threw back to second to try to double him off, but the throw got into center field, allowing both runners to move up. An infield single to third by Hendrickson allowed the unearned run to score.

In the seventh inning, Staton doubled with one out and scored on Cole’s single to center to knot the game up at 2, an inning before the homer by Pierce untied the game and tied up the series at one game apiece.

The series will move on to CommunityAmerica Ballpark for a 7:05 PM game Friday night between the T-Bones and Flyers. RHP Jon McDonald (9-7, 3.94) will face Schaumburg RHP Rick DeHart (2-2, 5.76). The series will continue Saturday at 7:05 PM, and, if necessary, there will be a 5:05 PM game Sunday, all in Kansas City.
