Amarillo Sox change name

When the T-Bones play host to the Amarillo Sox during June 4-6, 2015, at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, the club won't be the Sox. And it won't be wearing the brown and gold uniforms fans have grown accustomed to seeing in recent years.

After receiving input from fans, Amarillo Pro Baseball management announced this week that the club will now be known as the Amarillo Thunderheads.

“There were some great submissions from the fans,” said Thunderheads executive vice president and general manager Stephanie Tucker.

In choosing the name Amarillo Thunderheads, Tucker says fans have a name and a team that is uniquely theirs.

“Baseball is a spring and summer sport,” she said. “Our most impactful weather occurs in those seasons, including large, powerful thunderheads.”

Public comments on social media sites suggested, also, the majority of Sox fans wanted to get away from the brown and gold color scheme. Tucker said the new team colors – red, blue and gold – were chosen to honor the teams that have played in Amarillo including the Gold Sox, Dillas and Sox.

“It’s important to us that we honor our amazing baseball history while we prepare to write our own chapter,” said Tucker.
