T-Bones Fall to Fargo-Moorhead, 5-4

08/17/2004 11:10 AM - KANSAS CITY – The T-Bones banged out 10 hits, but scored only three runs against RedHawks starter Jake Whitney in a 5-4 defeat to Fargo-Moorhead Tuesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Rick Prieto recorded three hits and Phil Thompson drove in a pair for Kansas City, which fell to 17-15, 37-34, on the season.

Whitney (5-7) struck out eight and walked none in seven innings of work. Eric Kofler collected three hits and Derek Dormanen drove in three runs for the RedHawks (16-15, 48-31). Brent Franklin closed out the game for Fargo-Moorhead to earn his second save of the season. Kansas City starter Jonathan Krysa (8-7) allowed four runs on eight hits through six innings.

Fargo-Moorhead got on top early with two runs in the second inning. Kofler and Kelley Gulledge led off the inning with back-to-back singles and Jason Fitzgerald was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brian Ward drew a walk on a 3-1 count to plate the first run of the inning for the RedHawks and Dormanen hit a one-out sacrifice fly to right field to make it 2-0.

Kansas City answered in the third inning by sending eight men to the plate and took 3-2 lead. Prieto led off with an infield single and advanced to second after Ray Brown was hit by a pitch. Eddie Pearson followed with a smash just over the second baseman’s glove to load the bases for Cody Nowlin, who slapped a 2-2 offering into left-center field to bring home Prieto. After a strikeout, Thompson drove a ball into the corner in left field to plate Brown and Pearson.

The RedHawks regained the lead in the following frame with a pair of runs coming on a bases-loaded single by Dormanen that made it 4-3. Fargo-Moorhead added an unearned run in the eighth inning and the T-Bones followed with an unearned run of their own in the ninth, but that’s as close as they would get. David Viane and Kevin Sprague finished the game for the T-Bones in relief of Krysa.

The T-Bones and RedHawks will continue their three-game series Wednesday night beginning at 7:05 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Game Notes: Prieto singled and scored in the third inning to extend his team-high hitting streak to nine games. He has now hit safely in 26 of his last 27 games and has scored 85 runs on the season, just three shy of matching the Northern League record owned by Winnipeg’s Terry Lee (1997) and Duluth-Superior’s Anthony Lewis (2000)… T-Bones shortstop Jack Jones made his first start since July 22 after missing 23 games due to a groin injury. The veteran went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts… Kansas City had just three hits beyond the third inning, all of which were singles… The T-Bones remained 1.5 games behind first place Joliet, which lost to Sioux Falls, 9-3.
