Opportunity Knocks, Winnipeg Answers in 7-1 Win

08/14/2004 10:58 AM - WINNIPEG, Manitoba, - In spite of a top-notch pitching performance from Jon McDonald, the T-Bones fell 7-1 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes Saturday night, with McDonald the hard-luck loser for the ballgame.

Winnipeg went on the board first with an odd play in the bottom of the second. With runners at the corners, Amaury Garcia was picked off by McDonald. T.J. Soto, the runner on third, broke for home late and it appeared as if the T-Bones would retire Soto. But first baseman Ray Brown's throw to third baseman Phil Thompson glanced off Thompson's glove, allowing Soto to score an unearned run.

The Goldeyes scored another in the fifth, a Harry Berrios grounder sneaking under the glove of Thompson, which allowed Pat Scalabrini to score another unearned run.

In the seventh, the T-Bones had the bases loaded and one out. Chad Hill singled to left against starter Steve Murray to score Matt Ceriani, but Mike Hass was nailed at the plate attempting to tie the game. Rick Prieto then tried to head to third base on the play, but was thrown out for the third out of the inning.

Winnipeg put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the seventh, with a two-run double by Berrios and a two-run homer to left by Soto the big blows.

Murray picked up his seventh win for the Goldeyes, working seven innings while walking five and allowing four hits and one run. The T-Bones will try to salvage a split in the series Sunday at 1:30, sending Greg Bicknell (9-3, 4.03) to the hill against Winnipeg RHP T.J. Stanton (5-3, 4.63). The game will be broadcast live on www.tbonesbaseball.com and All Comedy Radio 1340.

Game Notes: The T-Bones are now 6-16 vs lefty starters... Prieto singled in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to seven games... McDonald has now allowed twenty unearned runs in 19 starts... KCK native Kevin Sprague worked a scoreless eighth for Kansas City.
