Good turn out for T-Bones open tryout

05/03/2013 9:37 PM -

For many players, it comes down to that one chance. Just one look by the right coach to get a shot at playing professional baseball.

On Friday morning in spite of a May snow on the ground, 53 players from as far away as Washington and California, not to mention Minnesota and Mississippi, did all they could to get spotted during the T-Bones annual open tryout.

After starting the morning at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, the group moved to 68's Inside Sports for the workout. The infielders and outfielders, under the watchful eye of T-Bones manager Kenny Hook, were timed  in the 40 and went through various fielding and hitting drills. In another section of the baseball warehouse, pitchers threw off the mound for T-Bones pitching coach Andy Shipman.

"We didn't sign anybody directly out of the tryout, but the talent of the kids, in general, was very good," Hook said. "We saw some guys who could play at this level, definitely. It can be tough to evaluate guys inside but the stop watch and radar gun numbers don't lie. I'll look through the information we gathered, talk with each coach who helped, and then formulate a list of guys we might contact down the road."

The T-Bones open their exhibition season on Monday, May 6, with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Lee's Summit Monarchs at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
