Sioux City scores two in ninth and beats KC

07/17/2012 9:20 PM - Sioux City scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning on a wild pitch by Kansas City’s Steve Kent, and then added another run later in the inning in a 6-4 win on Tuesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

After tying the game at 4-4 with a run in the top of the sixth, the Explorers’ Brian Bistagne scored on a wild pitch from Kent and then former T-Bones player Peter Barrows scored on a sacrifice fly by Kris Sanchez. Before walking Bistagne, Kent had retired 15 consecutive batters over his last four appearances.

“I was comfortable with Kent in that situation because of how well he’s been pitching,” manager Kenny Hook said. “Really, the pitching did its job holding (Sioux City) to four runs through eight. I expect to win anytime we hold them at four runs. I always expect our offense to get more than four runs.”

Kansas City was the first to cross the plate as Justin Bass scored on Trevor Coleman’s single RBI in the first inning. Bass scored again, giving him the first and second runs of the game, off of a sacrifice fly from Brandon Jones in the second.

Sioux City struck back with a home run by Barrows in the fourth and then a series of singles in the fifth that scored two, and allowed the Explorers to take a 3-2 lead. But Gus Milner and Jones scored in the bottom of the inning, giving KC a 4-3 lead.

Kansas City (31-27) plays the series finale against Sioux City (27-31) on Wednesday night at 7:05. Brian Grening (5-3, 3.49 ERA) will go for the T-Bones, while the Explorers send Alain Quijano (2-4, 3.19). Tickets are available by calling 913-328-5618.
