Kansas City T-Bones Sweep Double Header

06/03/2003 9:25 AM - Nate Sevier and Tony Gomes picked up victories in the Kansas City T-Bones double header sweep of the Joliet Jackhammers. The sweep marked the T-Bones second consecutive sweep of a double header at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The other occurred on June 13 against the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

The first game concluded a game that was suspended on May 28 at Joliet. At the point of the suspension, the two teams were tied at five. Kansas City struck first when the game was resumed when Taber Maier singled home Jimmy Walker. The T-Bones added runs in the eighth inning on Jack Jones’ second homerun of the year, a two-run shot to left, and in the ninth on Ray Brown’s first homerun of the season. Tony Gomes (1-0) picked up the win in relief and D.J. Johnson recorded his sixth save of the season.

The second game featured fireworks from the T-Bones’ bats as well as both benches. The team hit three homeruns in the game, highlighted by Chad Ehrnsberger’s sixth homerun of the season that sailed beyond the outer fence and out of the stadium in left field. Eddie Pearson and Ray Brown each hit their second homerun of the season as well.

The 11-0 game got interesting in the sixth inning after Ehrnsberger’s homerun when losing pitcher Derek Santiago (0-3) threw inside to the next batter, Ray Brown. Santiago was immediately ejected, but not after Ray Brown charged the mound. When the dust cleared, Santiago, Joliet catcher Ryan Sienko, and Brown all were asked to leave. Winning pitcher Nate Sevier (3-3) was ejected in the seventh inning after he threw inside to a Joliet batter. Sevier went six strong innings allowing no runs while scattering seven hits and striking out seven. The win ended Sevier’s five game winless streak.

The sweep improved the T-Bones record to 13-17 and gives Kansas City all the momentum heading into the final two games of the series. Erik Grunwald (1-0) takes the mound tomorrow looking to give the T-Bones their second three-game winning streak of the season. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m.
