T-Bones survive late rally by Newark, win 7-4

06/12/2012 10:00 AM -
Despite a four-run seventh-inning scare from Newark, Kansas City got timely hitting in a 7-4 win in the series opener at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Monday night.

T-Bones starter Brian Grening pitched six scoreless innings, but in the seventh inning problems arose quickly, including a pair of errors and a pair of wild pitches.

A throwing error by Reid Fronk allowed Eric McGee to score, and a double by Burt Reynolds scored Bryce Lane, bringing the Bears to within 3-2. Another error – this one by Trevor Coleman – allowed Reynolds to score, tying up the game. Dan Coury scored on a single by Matt Tomczyk, and the Bears led 4-3.

“If it weren’t for the error, I think Grening gets out of the seventh inning OK,” said T-Bones manager Kenny Hook. “He really stepped up for us and gave the bullpen a rest. Looking ahead, that’s huge for our pitching staff and for the bullpen.”

Ray Sadler gave the T-Bones an early advantage when he blasted a two-run home run to the berm, which put Kansas City up 2-0 in the first. Devin Goodwin singled in Justin Bass in the fourth, giving Kansas City a 3-0 lead.

After the Bears took the lead in the top of the seventh, Newark reliever Matt Lyons loaded the bases by walking two batters and hitting another. Brandon Jones and Coleman scored on a fielder’s choice by Justin Bass, and Kansas City regained the lead, 5-4. Kansas City added two more runs in the eighth. Jose Duran scored on a Sadler single, and Jones scored on a wild pitch.
