Wichita scores late, holds off Kansas City

06/10/2012 12:26 PM - Just when it looked as if the T-Bones would grab a decisive lead and hold off Wichita, the game turned in two quick innings as the Wingnuts scored six runs during the eighth and ninth, and left CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Saturday night with a 10-6 win in the second game of a three-game series.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Kansas City scored two runs after Gus Milner scored from third on a wild pitch by Robert Roth, and then Ray Sadler scored on an RBI single by Devin Goodwin. Kansas City and Wichita had been knotted at 4-4 since the top of the fourth inning.

But, in similar fashion to Friday night, Wichita took control of the game late. In the top of the eighth inning, the Wingnuts exploded for four runs. After pitcher Steve Kent, who replaced starter Nick Singleton in the seventh, issued a leadoff walk to Juan Richardson, C.J. Ziegler launched a two-run home run to left field that tied the game at 6-6. The Wingnuts took the lead when David Peralta scored on a wild pitch by Lucas Irvine. The final run was scored by Mitch Einerston on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Khoury.

After Wingnuts right hander Edgar Martinez pitched a perfect bottom of the eighth, Wichita added two more runs in the top of the ninth.

Offensively, the T-Bones were paced by Brandon Jones, who hit a three-run homer in the top of the fourth inning, giving Kansas City a short-lived 4-3 lead. Jones went 3-for-5 in the game.

The T-Bones (10-12) and Wingnuts (17-5) will finish the series on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, with Kansas City’s Devin Anderson (1-1) going against Wichita’s Josh Lowey (3-0). Tickets are available by calling the T-Bones box office at 913-328-5618.
