In this edition of the T-Bones Alumni Update we check in with Erik Hamren, the right-handed pitcher who made his major league debut with the San Diego Padres on Aug. 1, 2011.

Hamren, 25, made his debut at PETCO Park in a 6-2 loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-hander pitched a scoreless ninth for San Diego, walking one while striking out Dee Gordon to end the frame.

He made 14 total appearances with the Padres in 2011, going 1-0 with a 4.38 ERA in 12 1/3 innings while allowing just 10 hits and striking out 10. Hamren picked up his first major league victory on Aug. 23 in San Francisco after retiring former American League MVP Miguel Tejada with two runners on to end the eighth inning and preserve a 5-5 tie. San Diego scored twice in the top of the ninth and all-star closer Heath Bell retired the side in the bottom half of the frame to secure the 7-5 win for Hamren and the Padres.

Originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2008 amateur draft, Hamren spent two seasons in the organization before his release on Dec. 22, 2009. He then signed with the T-Bones as a free agent on March 9, 2010. Hamren made 37 relief appearances for Kansas City in 2010, going 0-1 with two saves and a 3.93 ERA while surrendering just 47 hits in 50 1/3 innings. He was sent to the Joliet JackHammers on Aug. 22, 2010, in a trade for pitcher Mike Rocco.

Hamren was signed by the Padres out of an Oct. 2010 tryout and opened the 2011 season at Class A-Advanced Lake Elsinore before earning a promotion to Double-A San Antonio. Hamren went 5-0 with one save and a miniscule 0.96 ERA in 65 2/3 innings between the two levels before his promotion, surrendering only 46 hits while striking out 69 and walking just 14 in that span.
