Costly Miscues by Kansas City Lead to 4-3 Loss

06/13/2011 8:53 PM -

The Sioux City Explorers (14-17) scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning, using three hits and two errors to gain a lead they would not relinquish as they defeated the Kansas City T-Bones (13-17), 4-3, on Monday night in Sioux City, IA.

The Explorers struck for all four of their runs in the decisive third inning against Devin Anderson (2-4, pictured), capitalizing on two T-Bones errors after a leadoff single to load the bases with nobody out. T.J. Bohn plated the first run with a sacrifice fly and was followed by an RBI single from Kent Sakamoto. Ray Serrano then capped the inning with a two-run home run, his third of the season.

Following the blast, Anderson faced the minimum over his final four and one-thirds innings with the help of a fourth-inning double play. The left-hander was charged with four unearned runs on six hits over seven innings in the loss. He has now dropped four straight decisions for the first time in his career.

Sioux City starter Kyle Wright (3-2) held the T-Bones scoreless until a bases-loaded groundout from Ray Sadler made the score 4-1 in the fifth. Kansas City pulled within one in the sixth, scoring the first run when Aharon Eggleston opened the inning with a double and eventually scored on a double-play groundout by Johnny Bowden. Keanon Simon added an RBI single later in the frame to make the score 4-3.

Wright left with two outs in the seventh having surrendered three runs on 11 hits in the victory. Eddie Delacruz took over for Sioux City to begin the eighth inning and struck out the first three batters he faced in the contest. The right-hander hit Jimmy Mojica to begin the ninth before striking out Rico Washington for the first out of the frame. Delacruz then struck out Sadler as Mojica was caught stealing for a game-ending double play.

Delacruz earned his second save of the season while striking out five of his six batters. Steven Stewart threw a perfect eighth to finish the game for Kansas City.

Sadler finished 0-for-five to snap a 10-game hit streak.

Kansas City sends T.J. Large (2-3, 4.82) to the mound in game two of the three-game series Tuesday night opposite Ty Marotz (2-1, 2.05) and the Explorers. First pitch is set for 7:05.
