The Winnipeg Goldeyes (15-13) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Kansas City T-Bones (12-15) held on for a 6-5 victory in the first game of a three-game series at Shaw Park in Winnipeg, MB, Canada.

Kansas City entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a three-run advantage after scoring twice in the top of the frame. Closer Andy Shipman, who induced a groundout with the bases loaded to finish the bottom of the eighth, returned in the ninth to close out the game for the T-Bones. With one out, Shipman surrendered three straight hits, including an RBI double to Wes Long to make the score 6-4. After a walk to Brian Myrow loaded the bases, Luis Alen drove in the second run with an RBI groundout that pushed runners to second and third with two out. Shipman then struck out veteran catcher Alan Rick to end the game and secure his sixth save of the season.

The T-Bones opened the game with two runs on two hits and one error in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead against Chris Salamida. They pushed their lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a solo home run by Dwayne White, his third of the season.

Salamida allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits over six and one-thirds innings in the contest, but did not factor into the decision.

Reid Santos (3-2) held Winnipeg scoreless until a two-run home run by Kody Kaiser pulled the Goldeyes within one in the fifth, 3-2. A solo home run by Justin Bass tied the game at three in the seventh, but Kansas City rallied to reclaim the advantage in the top of the eighth against former T-Bone Kevin Light (0-3). Light put two runners on with a walk and a single before giving way to reliever Aaron Hartsock. Brian Joynt greeted the right-hander with an RBI single, making the score 4-3.

Santos earned the victory for Kansas City after allowing three runs on five hits over seven innings. Light was charged with the one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Ryne Reynoso started the bottom of the eighth for Kansas City, surrendering a single and a walk before giving way to Shipman with two outs.

Shipman has now converted five straight save opportunities, all coming in a seven-day span dating back to June 4 at Wichita.

Game two of the weekend series is set for Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:00. Kansas City has yet to name their starter as they prepare to face left-hander Isaac Hess (1-0, 2.57) and the Goldeyes.
