More Triple-A Talent Added to Doherty’s Staff

The Kansas City T-Bones and manager Tim Doherty have announced that pitcher T.J. Large has been signed to a contract for the 2011 season.

Large, 27, has spent the last six seasons as a member of the Boston Red Sox organization after being drafted in the 46th round of the 2005 amateur draft. He quickly advanced to Triple-A Pawtucket in his first full professional season, and has made 46 appearances at that level over his career.

“T.J. adds another quality arm to our rotation,” Doherty said. “He brings Triple-A experience to the team and we are counting on him to help bolster the staff.”

Large’s best season came with Double-A Portland in 2009 when he went 3-0 with eight saves and a 1.08 ERA in 34 relief appearances, a span of 41 and two-thirds innings. He surrendered just 31 hits while striking out 34 and walking 14 in those outings. Over his six-year career, Large owns a strikeout-to-walk ratio better than 2:1. The right-hander was originally a ninth round selection of the San Francisco Giants in the 2001 amateur draft, but did not sign.

Kansas City now has a total of 19 players signed for the 2011 season: eight position players and 11 pitchers.

The T-Bones begin their 2011 campaign against the El Paso Diablos in El Paso, TX on May 12 and will host the Gary SouthShore RailCats in their home opener on May 17.
