Five in Fifth Pace Flyers, 9-2

05/26/2004 3:20 PM - The Schaumburg Flyers (6-1) came through for five runs in the top of the fifth and wound up scoring nine total in a 9-2 win over the Kansas City T-Bones (3-4) in front of 2,625 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

The T-Bones hopped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Chris LePine singled, went to second on a passed ball and came home on a Jack Jones two-out single.

Schaumburg came right back with one in the top of the fourth on a T.J. Staton solo shot to even the score. The top of the fifth saw Schaumburg send nine batters to the plate, with five scoring to make it 6-1. Run-scoring singles by Wandel Campana, Mario Delgado, Kirk Pierce and Ben Van Iderstine brought home four of the runs, and a sacrifice fly by Staton brought home the fifth against T-Bones starter Jayson Sigley (0-2). Sigley went 4.2 innings, allowing six earned runs in his second start of the season.

The third-inning run was the lone run the T-Bones could plate against Schaumburg starter Brett Gray (1-0), who worked five innings and allowed just two hits while striking out six.

The T-Bones got within four in the bottom of the seventh when Cody Nowlin doubled and came around to score from second on a wild pitch by pitcher Lyle Prempas.

Schaumburg extended their lead to seven with three runs in the top of the eighth against T-Bones reliever Clint Marcus. Ben Van Iderstine started things off with a single, followed by back to back homers by Chris Weekly and Justin Hendrickson to make it 9-2.

Tomorrow at 11:05 am, the T-Bones and Flyers will lock horns in the finale of the series and homestand. The T-Bones will send Caleb Balbuena (1-0) to the hill against Flyers starter Anthony Boughner (1-0). Tomorrow is a Businessman’s Special/Education Day, where free wireless Internet access will be provided at the ballpark for any businessmen who choose to make the ballpark their office!
