Clutch Hit Eludes T-Bones in 4-1 Loss

09/04/2009 9:55 PM -

The Kansas City T-Bones (1-2) left 11 men on base tonight as they fell, 4-1, to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (2-1) in game three of the 2009 Northern League Semifinals.  Kansas City now faces possible elimination in the best-of-five series tomorrow night.

The T-Bones put at least one runner on in each of their first six innings against Derell McCall (1-0), stranding nine runners in that span.  They pushed a runner into scoring position three times over those six frames but McCall continued to pitch out of trouble.

McCall surrendered his only run in the seventh when Aharon Eggleston reached on an error to begin the inning and scored on a double by the next hitter, Greg Jacobs (pictured).  McCall left after a flyout from the next batter.  The right-hander earned the victory after allowing one unearned run on seven hits over six and one-thirds innings.

Cody McAllister (0-1) retired the first 11 batters he faced for Kansas City before an error by the right-hander allowed Jay Pecci to reach safely with two outs in the fourth.  Steve Haake followed the miscue with his second home run of the postseason, giving Gary a 2-0 lead.  Mike Massaro plated two more in the fifth with a double, capping the RailCats scoring at four runs.

McAllister left in favor of Chris Rhoads after walking the next two batters following Massaro’s double.  Rhoads struck out Haake with the bases loaded to end the inning.

McAllister suffered the loss after allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits over four and two-thirds innings.

Rhoads threw a perfect sixth before leaving with one on and one out in the seventh.  Payton Tweddale got the next three outs for Kansas City before Brady Martinez finished the game with a strikeout to his only batter.

Tom Thornton and Aaron Cook combined to finish the seventh and Cook added a scoreless eighth for Gary.  Andy Shipman earned his second save of the postseason with a perfect ninth to close out the game for the RailCats.

Kansas City sends left-hander Brett Davis to the mound looking to avoid elimination in game four tomorrow night.  Gary will counter with right-hander Chris Jones.  First pitch is set for 6:00.  Due to the KU football game tomorrow, the T-Bones broadcast will be tape delayed on KXTR 1660 AM.  To follow the action live, visit www.tbonesbaseball.com and click the listen or watch live links.
