Two members of the Kansas City T-Bones championship squad have decided to retire as catcher John Martin and infielder Steve Trout prepare to begin their respective coaching careers.

Martin, 25, hit .257 with three home runs and 27 RBI in 55 games for Kansas City in 2008.  After hitting .310 in 11 games in May, Martin struggled with a .213 average in 17 games in June.  He rebounded in July, however, posting a .289 mark over 16 games.  The Overland Park native posted two four-RBI games and 12 multi-hit games in 2008, including two consecutive two-hit games to finish the regular season.

“I had a good time with the team last season,” said Martin.  “I enjoyed the season and thought that a championship would be a good way to end my playing career.”

Martin has accepted a position as pitching coach for Emporia State.

Trout, 24, batted .285 with 20 RBI in 63 games with the T-Bones in 2008.  His best month came in June when the right-handed hitter posted a .328 mark in 19 games.  Trout posted a nine game on-base streak from June 9-20, hitting .393 with two doubles and six RBI in that span.  His best game came on May 19 when he went two-for-two with a double, triple and three RBI at Gary.

“The 2008 season was an unbelievable experience,” said Trout.  “It was my first professional championship and I want to thank Andy (McCauley) and the rest of the coaching staff for the opportunity.  I wish the T-Bones the best of luck in their title defense in 2009.”

Trout is now the catching instructor for Texas State University.  He will also assist as an infielder and hitting instructor.
