Weekly Update: Destiny road

10/17/2008 11:19 AM -

The Kansas City Wizards ended the weekend in one of two wildcard spots for the 2008 MLS Cup Playoffs. After a solid 1-0 win against the New England Revolution, Kansas City stands even on 36 points with the New York Red Bulls but ahead of them in the Eastern Conference standings. The Wizards hold the head-to-head tie-breaker against New York after going 1-0-1 against the club this season in MLS play. Should Kansas City and New York end the season tied on points, Kansas City would advance ahead of the Red Bulls. If the season ended today, the Wizards would face the Columbus Crew in the first round of the playoffs, while New York would face the Houston Dynamo of the Western Conference.

Kansas City controls its own destiny in the playoff picture. Wins in each of their last two matches will secure a playoff spot regardless of other results. Kansas City can also clinch a playoff spot this weekend with a win and favorable results in other matches around MLS. If D.C. United loses or ties Thursday versus New England, the Wizards win Saturday versus San Jose, FC Dallas loses Saturday at Real Salt Lake and Colorado loses or ties Sunday at Chivas USA, Kansas City would be assured of a playoff spot. Otherwise, the Wizards playoff fate will come down to the final week of the season for the fourth consecutive year.
