WINNIPEG, Mb. – The Kansas City T-Bones pulled within one with a five-run eighth inning but fell a run short in the end to the Winnipeg Goldeyes, 6-5, at Canwest Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

The Goldeyes picked up the majority of their runs in the second inning, scoring five times on three hits, an error and two wild pitches against left-hander Todd Moser.  Chad Ehrnsberger began the inning when he reached safely on an error by Jim Fasano and later scored on a two-run single by Scott Schade.  An RBI single by Demetrius Heath was sandwiched between two run-scoring wild pitches as Winnipeg took a 5-0 lead after two.

The Goldeyes loaded the bases in the third but Moser induced a double play from Fehlandt Lentini to end the threat.  Heath then began Winnipeg’s fourth inning with a double, advanced to third with a stolen base and scored the Goldeyes sixth run on a wild pitch.

Moser was charged with six runs, four earned, on seven hits over three and one-thirds innings in the loss.

Bear Bay threw seven stellar innings for Winnipeg, retiring the first 11 and 19 of the first 20 batters he faced thanks to a double play in the third inning.  Kansas City got just one runner to second through his first seven frames when a walk by Fasano forced Greg Jacobs over with two outs in the seventh.

Bay allowed the first two batters to reach on a walk and a single before collecting an out in the eighth.  Aharon Eggleston then doubled home both runners to chase Bay and pull the T-Bones within four, 6-2.  Brian Beuning entered for Winnipeg and walked the first batter he faced before surrendering three straight RBI singles as Kansas City pushed the score to 6-5.

Bay allowed three runs on five hits over seven and one-thirds innings in the victory.

Brady Martinez got the final two outs in the fourth and allowed just one hit over two and two-thirds innings for Kansas City.  Payton Tweddale held Winnipeg scoreless over the final two innings, allowing one hit in that span.

Eggleston drew a two-out walk from Beuning in the ninth to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but the league’s leading base stealer was caught stealing second to end the contest.

The two teams face off again tomorrow night as Chris Rhoads of Kansas City takes on Zach Baldwin for the Goldeyes in the second game of a three-game set.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:00.
