Four-Run Second Prevents T-Bones Sweep

06/01/2008 3:12 PM -

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – A four-run second inning by the Schaumburg Flyers proved too much for Kansas City as the T-Bones fell short 5-4 in an attempt to sweep their Northern League rivals at Alexian Field this afternoon.  The T-Bones fall to 12-5 but remain in first place in the Northern League.

Kansas City got on the board first against Flyers starter Brad Mumma, using a two-run home run from Jim Fasano to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Kenny Durost (pictured) then answered with a perfect bottom of the first before Schaumburg opened up for four runs on five hits, all singles, in the second inning to jump ahead 4-2.  Jermaine Allensworth, Mark Haske and Rontrez Johnson all drove in runs with singles.  Lance Koenig collected the other RBI in the inning with a groundout to second.

Mumma wouldn’t surrender another run until an RBI single by Fasano in the fifth.  He would allow one more on an RBI double from Brad Correll in the seventh en route to the victory, leaving after giving up four runs on eight hits in seven innings of work.

Durost allowed just one more run on a sacrifice fly by Haske in the fourth, lasting six innings after surrendering five runs on nine hits as he fell to 1-1 on the season.

David Byard celebrated his birthday by striking out two of the four batters he faced in a scoreless eighth.  Jim Popp allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Tag Horner struck out four of the six batters he faced in two perfect innings of relief for Kansas City.  Rob Watson finished the game four-for-four with four singles, a walk and two runs scored.

Kansas City gets tomorrow off before hosting the Winnipeg Goldeyes for a three-game set beginning Tuesday.  First pitch for game one is scheduled for 7:05.
