T-Bones Service Club Challenge a Success

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Local chapters of Kiwanis, Lions, Optimists, Rotary and Sertoma clubs gathered at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Tuesday May 27th, for the first-annual T-Bones Service Club Challenge. The challenge was to determine which group could collect the greatest amount of food for Harvesters, Kansas City’s only food bank.

The food was collected in designated bins by the front gate, and Harvesters then measured the amounts, by weight. Nearly 2,500 pounds of food was collected.

The winning club was announced in the sixth inning of the T-Bones' 9-1 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Kiwanis was the winner, having collected a whopping 1,264 pounds of food--just over half of the total amount. "Even though Kiwanis took home the trophy, the real winner is Harvesters, by collecting the food and serving needy families" said David Hurrelbrink, Lt. Governor for District Nine, Kansas District of Kiwanis.

"We really appreciate the support of the T-Bones and the participating service clubs," said Karen Siebert, Communications Manager for Harvesters. "We see an elevated need during the summer, since over 100,000 area children receive free or reduced-priced breakfast and lunch during the school year. Now that school is out, many of those kids and their families really rely on us."

The T-Bones wrap up their homestand tonight against the Gary-SouthShore RailCats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Tickets are available by calling the T-Bones box office at (913) 328-5639.
