MLB & Royals Hall of Famers Coming to Ballpark05/30/2008 8:00 AM - At the first Willie Wilson T-Bones Classic, Amos Otis hit a homerun pitched by Ferguson Jenkins. This Saturday, May 31, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins and Royals Hall of Famers Dennis Leonard, Amos Otis and Fred Patek will play in the third annual Willie Wilson T-Bones Classic.
Ferguson Jenkins began his nineteen-year career when he was signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1962 and made his Major League debut in 1965. Jenkins appeared in three all-star games as a Chicago Cub in ‘67, ’71, and ’72. Jenkins earned 284 career wins and had a 3.34 career ERA. Jenkins is the only pitcher in history to record more than 3,000 strike-outs (3,192), while giving up less than 1,000 walks (997). Jenkins became the only Canadian in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame when he was inducted in 1991.
The Kansas City Royals drafted Dennis Leonard in 1972 in the second round of the amateur draft. Leonard was 144-106 with a 3.70 ERA in 2,187 innings. In 1977, he finished first in wins and won 20 games three times. He led the league in games started in '78, '80 and '81. In 1979 Leonard led the league in shutouts, and innings pitched in 1981. He threw 200 plus innings for seven straight years. In 1977 Leonard finished fourth in the Cy Young Award Voting.
Amos Otis started his career with the New York Mets, which lasted from 1967 through 1969 before he signed with the Royals in 1970. Otis hit .277 for his career total of 193 homeruns, with 1,007 RBI. Otis won the AL Gold Glove Award in ‘71, ‘73, and ‘74. 1978 was a career year for Otis, he hit .298 with a .525 slugging percentage, and a .380 on-base percentage. In 40 attempts he stole 32 bases, and finished fourth in the AL Most Valuable Player Award Voting. In the 1980 World Series, Kansas City’s first, the right-handed hitter slugged three homers and drove in seven runs. He left the Royals and played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in ‘84.
Fred Patek made his Major League debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in June of 1968. The Royals Hall of Famer played fourteen years in the Majors as a shortstop, including nine as a Royal before he became a free agent in 1979. Patek hit .241 and stole 396 bases in his nine seasons in a Royal uniform, including a league leading 53 stolen bases in 1977. Patek represented the Royals in the ‘72, ’76, and ’78 all-star games. In 1971, Patek finished sixth in the Major League MVP balloting. Patek played his last Major League game as a California Angel in 1982.
