GARY, Ind. – The Kansas City T-Bones continue to produce late in games, scoring four more times in the ninth inning this afternoon to finish off a three-game sweep of the defending champion Gary SouthShore RailCats with a 5-1 victory at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind.

Kenny Durost (pictured) was stellar for Kansas City, surrendering just five hits over six scoreless innings.  The RailCats were only able to advance one baserunner past first against the right-hander, coming when Cristian Guerrero stole second after leading off the second inning with an infield single.

RailCats hurler Kai Tuomi was solid as well, but appeared to be in line for the loss after surrendering a run in the second inning on an RBI double by Neb Brown, plating Kevin Mahar who led off the frame with a single.  Tuomi allowed six hits before leaving with two outs in the sixth inning.  Neither starter factored into the decision.

Drew Dickinson, making his season debut for Gary, held the T-Bones scoreless over the next one and two-thirds innings in support of Tuomi.

Brady Martinez entered with a 1-0 T-Bones advantage, but surrendered the tying mark on an RBI single to Omar Padilla, his first professional hit.  The knock drove in Mike Rohde who reached with a one-out double.  The next batter, Mike Reese, looked to extend the inning with a single up the middle; but second baseman Rob Watson stopped the ball and threw out Padilla, who was caught after a big turn at third.

Neither team scored in the eighth, but Kansas City struck again in the ninth with a four-run frame off Brad Voyles.  Voyles got the first two batters he faced in the inning, but walked the next two batters before surrendering an RBI single to Aharon Eggleston to break the 1-1 tie.  The T-Bones followed with an RBI single from Geoff McCallum and a two-run double from Rob Watson to extend their lead to four.

Rick Hummel got the final two outs of the eighth inning for Kansas City.  He started the ninth, getting one out between two hits before giving way to closer David Trahan.  Trahan picked up his league-leading third save after striking out pinch-hitter Jay Pecci and inducing a flyout from Reese.  Hummel improved to 1-0 with the victory.

Tomorrow is a league-wide travel day before action picks back up on Friday when the T-Bones host the Schaumburg Flyers in their home opener.  First pitch at CommunityAmerica Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05.

Game Notes:  Kansas City scored 24 runs in the three-game set in Gary, plating 23 of those runs in the seventh inning or later.  They scored 11 of those runs in the ninth inning or later (two in the tenth in the first game of the series)…The T-Bones posted two five-game win streaks last season, both coming in August.  They haven’t won six straight since June 1-6, 2005.
