Meet the T-Bones: Joey Fitzgerald – Head Groundskeeper

04/22/2008 8:50 AM -
For the first time in four years the T-Bones will have somebody new maintaining the playing surface at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Joey Fitzgerald has taken over as the new head groundskeeper for the Kansas City T-Bones replacing Don Frantz who held the post previously for about four years.

Fitzgerald is no stranger to the T-Bones as he served on Frantz’s staff in 2005 and 2007 with a stop in Boston as a grounds keeping intern for the Red Sox in 2006. Fitzgerald also served on the grounds crew for the Kansas City Royals as well as the T-Bones last season.

“I had the good fortune to take over one of the best fields in the league and I feel very privileged to learn the trade under some of the best in the business,” said Fitzgerald. “I’m very thankful to the T-Bones for giving me this opportunity.”

Fitgerald was a Golf Facilities and Turf Systems Management major at the University of Minnesota-Crookston in Crookston, Minnesota.

Joey is married to Shannon Fitzgerald and the two now make their home in Shawnee, Kansas.

He will spearhead an operation that will replace the current Kentucky Bluegrass surface with Patriot Bermudagrass on May 11 in time for the T-Bones May 23 home opener.
