KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Northern League has announced that Kansas City T-Bones first baseman Mario Delgado and reliever Matt Schweitzer (pictured) have been named Player and Pitcher of the Week respectively for the week ending August 5, 2007.  It is the third consecutive week that a T-Bones player has been recognized as Player of the Week.

Delgado, 28, the 2004 Northern League Player of the Year, batted .480 (12-for-25) with two doubles, four home runs, 10 RBI and six runs scored on the week. A career .290 batter entering the 2007 season, he currently ranks fourth in the league in batting (.350), first in doubles (28) and extra base hits (41), and fourth in the league in RBI (62).

The 6-0, 230-pounder, is playing his third year in the Northern League after having played for the Schaumburg Flyers in 2003 and 2004, both under the T-Bones current manager Andy McCauley. Delgado was voted to the All-Star team in the Northern League in 2004 and in the Carolina League in 2005. He also shares the Northern League single-season record with 104 RBI, a mark he set in 2004. Bryan Warner of Lincoln tied the record in 2005.

The left-handed hitting native of San Diego, CA, was originally drafted in the 14th round of the 2001 amateur draft by the Philadelphia Phillies. After two seasons with the Phillies organization, he was signed by the Flyers. After two successful seasons in the Northern League, he was signed by the Baltimore Orioles organization. He signed with the T-Bones prior to the start of the ’07 season.

Schweitzer, 28, appeared in five of the T-Bones six games this past week and posted a 3-0 record while holding opponents scoreless over four and one-thirds innings. He only allowed two hits while striking out five and walking none in that span. His three wins on the week give him four on the season, tying him for third on the Kansas City pitching staff.

On the season, the 6-1, 190-pounder, is 4-2 with a 1.79 ERA. He currently has the longest consecutive scoreless innings streak in the league at 15 and one-thirds innings pitched, beginning on July 7. He has only allowed eight runs in ’07 and five of those came on back-to-back losses during the first week of the season.

The 28-year-old left-hander has spent his entire career in the independent leagues. Following a standout career at Olivet Nazarene College (Bourbonnais, IL) where he went 15-1 in 2000, he was signed by the Richmond Roosters of the Frontier League. After six seasons with the Roosters, he made the jump to the Northern League, signing with the Schaumburg Flyers for the 2006 season. He left the Frontier League as the career leader in appearances (194), innings pitched (434.1), and strikeouts (427). With the Flyers, he went 6-4 with a 3.58 ERA and set two Schaumburg franchise records. He appeared in a single-season record 50 games and established the team’s consecutive scoreless innings streak at 27 (from June 20 to July 27).
