T-Bones Sweep Goldeyes Behind Rookie’s Walk Off

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Outfielder Nick Jaros (pictured) made a positive impression in his first professional game as he stroked the game-winning single down the third baseline to complete a three-game sweep over Winnipeg, 9-8, in front of 5,557 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.  It was the third straight game that Kansas City has won in their final at bat.

After making the start the day before, the T-Bones called upon right-hander Dan Jackson to carry the load on the mound, as starter Kenny Durost exited the contest with an apparent injury after just one and one-thirds innings. Jackson was effective, allowing three runs on six hits in four and two-thirds innings of relief.

Winnipeg opened the scoring when designated hitter Walter Young blooped an RBI single to right in the first. They added two more in the second on an RBI single by Fehlandt Lentini and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Anton French.

Kansas City answered with a run in the bottom of the second as designated hitter Calvin Pickering hit his 14th home run of the season. The T-Bones took the lead in the third when Nelson Gord and Rob Watson hit back-to-back one-out singles and scored on a home run from Mario Delgado.

The Goldeyes retook the lead in the seventh off right-hander Danny Core, who came in for Jackson with two on and nobody out.  Core retired the first two batters he faced, but surrendered a single to Young that plated the inherited runners.

After a 13 pitch at-bat, Delgado tied the game at five with his second home run of the game in the bottom of the frame. The Goldeyes quickly reclaimed the lead in the eighth with a two-run homer by catcher Jeremy Lundberg and an RBI single by French.

Kansas City continued to battle, scoring three runs in the eighth to tie the game at eight, on an error and a two-run double by Al Benjamin. Matt Schweitzer came in to pitch a perfect ninth and earned the victory for the third straight game as Jaros laced a two-out single down the third baseline to score Neb Brown from third.

The T-Bones have tomorrow off before heading to Gary for a three-game set on Tuesday.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.

Game Notes: Rob Watson’s walk in the first moved his home on-base streak to 37 games, every game played at CommunityAmerica Ballpark this season… Pickering moved his Northern League RBI lead to 71…Delgado extended his hitting streak to 11 games.  His two home runs were his second straight multi-home game…Nelson Gord singled in the third to extend his hit streak to 11 games…Nick Jaros singled in the sixth for his first professional hit.  His ninth-inning RBI was also his first professional RBI.
