07/11/2003 11:16 AM - Fargo-Moorhead starter Mike Peschel notched his third win of the season, and second against Kansas City, as the Redhawks defeated the T-Bones 8-6 Friday night. Peschel made his first start of the season against the T-Bones June 10 and pitched into the seventh inning to earn his first victory of the season. Tonight, he would pitch into the eighth inning to garner a third win.

The scoring started in the top of the first in a bazaar manner. Redhawks’ rightfielder Jon Weber sent a fly ball deep to right that Bao Vinh carefully tracked. As he reached the wall, he jumped up and caught the ball. The only problem was that his momentum flipped him over the four-foot wall in right, which gave Weber his league-leading eleventh homer of the season.

The T-Bones answered with single runs in the second and third innings against Peschel. Taber Maier’s second home run of the season barely cleared the wall in left and gave Kansas City a temporary 2-1 lead.

After allowing one run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth, T-Bones starter Erik Grunwald (2-2) was chased from the game after Steve Foley singled to drive home a run in the sixth. Reliever Matt Kozaria did not fare any better as he surrendered hits to the next three batters. The Redhawks scored a total of four runs in the inning to give them the lead for good at 8-2.

Peschel (3-0) would run into trouble in the eighth inning as the T-Bones created their best scoring opportunity of the game. Rick Prieto and Ray Brown’s singles to start the inning caused Fargo manager Doug Simunic to remove Peschel in favor of Curtus Moak. Jack Jones then tripled off of Moak to center, clearing the bases and bringing Kansas City to within three. The T-Bones could not bring home Jones, however, as Moak struck out three of the next four batters.

A highlight for the more than 5400 fans in attendance was Eddie Pearson’s homer in the ninth. Eddie sent a rocket into the Kansas City night that landed within inches of the clubhouse in right field for his sixth homer of the season. That run closed the gap to two, but closer Steve Montgomery got Ray Brown to strike out looking to end the game. It was Montgomery’s eighth save of the season.

The game improved Fargo’s already league best record to 33-13. Kansas City’s record dropped to 20-26. The same two teams meet again tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Tony Bacci takes the mound for the T-Bones and looks to give his team their first win over Fargo this season. The Redhawks will answer with Jodie Kennedy, who pitched a complete game shutout in his only other appearance versus Kansas City this season.
