Shelley Goes Route as RailCats Beat T-Bones 3-1

07/30/2006 7:49 PM - Gary SouthShore RailCat righthander Jason Shelley pitched a complete game five-hitter in beating the Kansas City T-Bones, 3-1, in front of 2,537 at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind. The T-Bones (30-34) fell to 8-8 in the second half, while Gary (31-33) improved to 7-9 in the second half while taking two of three from Kansas City in the series.

Shelley allowed just a seventh-inning run to the T-Bones, coming when newcomer Zach Norman's sac fly plated Craig Hurba, who had reached on a fielder's choice. In picking up his eighth win of the season against five losses, Shelley retired nine T-Bones in a row at one point.

Greg Bicknell took a hard-luck loss for Kansas City, his ninth of the season in fourteen decisions. The veteran righty allowed two runs, both coming on solo home runs, in seven-plus innings of work: a first-inning round-tripper by former Royal Jermaine Allensworth and a seventh-inning dinger by Steve Booth. After the home run by Allensworth, Bicknell set down nine of the next ten batters he faced.

Reliever Buddy Blair allowed the insurance run to the RailCats in the bottom of the eighth, with the lone batter he faced scoring on a Kevin White double down the left field line. James Morrison, who allowed the double to White, pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

Shelley, who was named as Baseball America's Independent League Pitcher of the Year in 2003 while a member of the Rockford RiverHawks, struck out eight while walking just one in his first complete game of the season and eleventh in his career.

The T-Bones return home Monday night at 7:05 pm to begin a seven-game homestand, including a three-game set with Joliet and four in a weekend series against Schaumburg. Tickets are still available by visiting www.tbonesbaseball.com or by calling (913)328-BALL (2255).
