T-Bones Down Cracker-Cats 5-2 in Series Opener

07/10/2006 10:31 PM - KANSAS CITY – The T-Bones (23-26) scored two runs in the eighth inning to secure a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Cracker-Cats (21-28) Monday night in front of a Monday-best 5,205 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

The T-Bones made the first move, taking a 2-0 lead as Brandon Jones broke a scoreless tie in the third inning by blasting his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot that also allowed J.D. Foust to score after reaching base on a fielder’s choice.

Edmonton responded in their half of the fourth inning. After notching a leadoff single, Terrence McClain scored on a sacrifice fly to left field. A base hit by Dan Chappel one batter later allowed Derek Patterson to score after stealing third during Chappel’s at bat. Patterson’s run tied the game at two runs each.

Kansas City reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning when Foust scored his second run of the game thanks to a Charles Peterson double, his 13th of the season, which gave the hosts a 3-2 edge. The T-Bones got two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on back-to-back solo home runs by Craig Hurba and Doug Dreher, his first bomb of the season. The home runs gave the T-Bones the 5-2 lead they would win by.

T-Bones starter Greg Bicknell (5-5) gave his club another long outing, pitching eight complete innings for the fifth time in six starts on his way to his fifth win of the season. Bicknell allowed two runs on eight hits and threw five strikeouts while walking just one of the 32 batters he faced. Byron Embry relieved Bicknell in the ninth and promply struck out two of the three batters he faced to earn his 11th save of the season.

Edmonton and Kansas City will meet once again Tuesday night. Hank Woodman (1-0, 10.80) will make his second start of the season for the T-Bones. The Cracker-Cats will counter with All-Star right-hander Brett Lawson (6-1, 3.79). Woodman’s first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
