Behind the strength of 17 hits, six of which were home runs, the Schaumburg Flyers defeated the T-Bones 17-5 Sunday evening at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Drew Garner, fresh off a college career at Southern Arkansas, made his professional debut for the T-Bones in the final game of the series and was rudely welcomed by the bats of the Flyers in his 1 2/3 innings pitched. The rookie allowed eight runs on seven hits and struck out one in his debut.

Trailing 8-0 early, Mike Brown’s solo shot in the fourth put the T-Bones on the board for the first time on the afternoon and pulled them as close as they would come in the ballgame, but the Flyers responded by plating four more in the fifth in handing the T-Bones their biggest margin of defeat of the season.

The Flyers’ Nelson Gord and Justin Hendrickson were responsible for a majority of the offensive damage combining for three home runs and seven RBI. Tim Marks drove in four and Jarrod Patterson and Eric Cole also homered for the Flyers in their offensive power display.

The insurmountable lead for the T-Bones provided for some interesting pitching as three current position players took the hill at some point during the game. The 2004 Frontier League Pitcher of the Year, T-Bones shortstop Chad Sosebee; outfielder Greg Jacobs, a 13th round pick of the Angels in 1998; and catcher Sean Flynn all took the hill for the T-Bones. Sosebee pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed one earned run in his second appearance of the year, and Jacobs fanned two in the ninth in his T-Bones pitching debut.

The T-Bones have three days off for the Northern League All-Star break before beginning a four game series at Schaumburg on Thursday.

Notes: The 17 hits allowed matched a previous season-high set by Sioux City… Sean Flynn pitched 2/3 of an innings allowing two runs with one walk… Rick Prieto missed the ballgame and will not play in the upcoming all-star game due to his nagging hamstring injury.
