Late Rally Again Cooks T-Bones as Saints Take Series

07/27/2011 10:01 PM -

Adam Frost drove in two runs with a single to break a three-all tie in the bottom of the eighth inning as the St. Paul Saints (41-29) took the rubber match of a three-game series versus the Kansas City T-Bones (33-37), 7-3, on Wednesday night at Midway Stadium.

Both teams matched run totals in the third and fifth innings as they scored one and two runs respectively in those frames. Kansas City used an RBI single by Jim Fasano (pictured) to gain a 1-0 advantage against Edwin Walked in their half of the third before Ole Sheldon answered with an RBI double off Kris Johnson in the bottom of the inning.

The T-Bones scored both of their fifth-inning runs on a double by Fasano before an RBI single by Sheldon and sacrifice fly from Jason Cooper tied the game at three in bottom of the frame.

Johnson was charged with three runs on eight hits over five innings. Walker lasted six and one-thirds innings for St. Paul, allowing three runs on six hits while throwing 129 pitches. Neither starter factored into the decision.

Drew Graham (1-1) retired the first seven batters he faced in relief of Johnson before walking Ronnie Bourquin in the eighth. Andy Shipman entered and sandwiched a strikeout between two singles as the Saints loaded the bases with two outs. Frost followed with his game-winning hit, driving in two runs to push the score to 5-3. The next batter, Shane Costa, reached on an infield single that plated two additional tallies for St. Paul and capped the final at 7-3.

Graham took the loss as he was charged with Bourquin’s go-ahead run in the decisive inning. It was the only base runner Graham allowed in the outing. Kyle Foster (5-1) earned his second victory in as many nights for the Saints with two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.

Fasano finished two-for-five while driving in all three of Kansas City’s runs.

Kansas City now heads to Wichita for a single game against the Wingnuts on Thursday night before the teams come to Kansas City for a two-game set on Friday and Saturday. The two-game series will open a five-games-in-seven-days homestand for the T-Bones at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. First pitch of all three contests is set for 7:05.
