KANSAS CITY – Darin Kinsolving broke a 4-all tie with a single up the middle in the 14th inning to give visiting Sioux Falls a 5-4 win over the T-Bones Friday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The 14-inning affair matched the longest game played by Kansas City (13-21) in its two year history and was the longest Northern League game of the year.

Kinsolving, who also added a home run and double on the night, brought home Felix Pagan to end a game that matched a Northern League record for combined strike outs. Pitching was dominant for both teams as the Canaries’ (17) and T-Bones’ batters (18) combined for 35 K’s. The total eclipsed the 12-year record which was originally set, ironically, by Sioux Falls (18) and Sioux City (16) on June 19, 1993. Brandon Parker (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Canaries, while Clint Marcus (0-1) suffered the loss for Kansas City.

Overshadowed by the final outcome were two strong performances by the game’s starting pitchers, Kansas City’s Jon McDonald and Sioux Falls’ Wes Faust. McDonald allowed four runs in seven innings, while matching a franchise high with eight strikeouts. Faust fanned nine in his seven innings of work.

For the second straight night, the Canaries (11-22) got on the board first – on a solo shot by Kinsolving to right field in the second inning that gave Sioux Falls the 1-0 lead. But the T-Bones answered with a pair of runs in the home half.

Ray Brown and Chad Shindle each singled to start the second-inning rally for the T-Bones. Matt Ceriani followed with a one-out double to left field that brought home Brown and placed Shindle on third for Mike Hass, who was making his professional debut. Hass bounced the ball back to the pitcher, but got the job done as Shindle was called safe at home plate after a collision that knocked the ball loose from catcher Jacob Wallis.

Sioux Falls tied the game at two when Marc Mirizzi drove in Joe Rhomberg with a single in the third inning, but once again, Kansas City wasted little time responding. Eddie Pearson made it 4-2 with a towering drive over the fence in right-center field that brought Prieto home.

The T-Bones wasted prime scoring opportunities in the fourth and fifth innings. Jack Jones was stranded on third after a lead-off triple in the fourth and Chad Hill was left on second after a lead-off double in the fifth. Sioux Falls made Kansas City pay with a pair of runs in the sixth inning thanks to a two-out single by Jacob Wallis and a wild pitch that tied the game at four. The T-Bones and Canaries will conclude their four-game series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Pearson is batting .430 (37-for-86) with three home runs and 26 RBIs in 22 June games. Overall, he is hitting .383 for the season with seven home runs and 34 RBIs for the season… For the eighth straight game, Rick Prieto scored at least one run for the T-Bones. The veteran has now scored at least one run 10 of Kansas City’s last 11 games and in all but nine games all season… Clark Parker had a less than memorable night at the plate for Sioux Falls. The DH struck out in his first five of his six at-bats. He popped out to the catcher with a failed sacrifice bunt attempt in his only other plate appearance that left the go-ahead run on first base in the 10th inning… The T-Bones left 10 men on base.
