Campana, Flyers Walk Off With 7-4 Win in 11

06/19/2004 2:47 PM - SCHAUMBURG, IL- The Schaumburg Flyers defeated the Kansas City T-Bones in dramatic fashion on Saturday, June 19, prevailing 7-4 in 11 innings on a two-out, three run 'walk off' home run by Flyers 2B Wandel Campana.

The Flyers improved to 21-8 with the win at Alexian Field and stayed atop the South Division's first half standings. Second place Lincoln stayed 2.5 games back by defeating Winnipeg in Northern League pennant race action. Kansas City fell to 10-19, 11 games behind the first place Flyers.

Campana hit an 0-2 pitch from reliever Matt McClellan to straightaway left field to end an exciting game. Schaumburg had scored single runs in both the ninth and tenth innings to tie the game twice and avoid a loss. The 'walk off' blast was set up when McClellan walked Geoff McCallum on four straight pitches, moving Chris Weekly to second base. Weekly had reached on an infield hit.

The home run was Campana's second of the season and was also his second 'walk off' homer as a Flyer. The former Reds minor leaguer did the same on August 26, 2003 to defeat St. Paul. The Flyers now have four game-ending home runs in the franchise's six-year history. All have come since June 27, 2003 during the Andy McCauley regime.

Kansas City scored a pair of two-out runs in the top of the ninth inning against RHP Gabe DeHoyos to take a 3-2 lead and things looked bleak as the first two Schaumburg batters were retired in the bottom of the ninth against T-Bones closer D.J. Johnson. However, Ben Van Iderstine tripled to the gap in right center field as the ball eluded the diving centerfielder Rick Prieto. He then came in on a two-strike single by Weekly to tie the game at 3-3. RF Chris LePine dove for the Weekly liner but could not come up with a circus catch.

The teams traded runs in the tenth as Mario Delgado doubled home the tying run after a McCallum walk and a sacrifice bunt by Campana. Brett Weber worked the last two innings for the win, moving to 4-1.

RHP Hank Woodman struck out 11 T-Bones in eight innings but left trailing 1-0.

The Flyers are up 2-0 in the four-game series and will prepare for a 1:20 PM matinee on Sunday in Schaumburg. RHP Mike Ott (0-1) will oppose K.C. RHP Robby Read (T-Bones Debut On Sunday). The game can be heard on All Comedy Radio 1340 AM and www.tbonesbaseball.com.

Notes: The Flyers are 13 games over .500 in a season for the first time in franchise history...Campana was the hero, just days after being hit in the face by a pitched ball on Wednesday and missing Thursday's game vs. Gary...Woodman came within one strikeout of the franchise record, last set by Billy Coleman in June 2001...Delgado doubled in his last three at-bats to knock in three at clutch moments...Van Iderstine's table-setting triple in the ninth enabled him to extend his streak as he has reached base via hit or walk in all 29 games this season...That streak is an ongoing team record...Kansas City first baseman Ray Brown and Flyers Manager Andy McCauley were ejected in separate arguments in the 10th inning...
