Goldeyes Sneak Past T-Bones, 6-5

06/16/2004 2:27 PM - KANSAS CITY – Winnipeg’s Pat Scalabrini scored the decisive run on a passed ball in the top of the ninth as the Goldeyes squeaked by the T-Bones, 6-5, Wednesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The defeat snapped Kansas City’s season-high, five-game winning streak.

The T-Bones didn’t go down without a fight however, as their ninth-inning rally came up just short. Third baseman Chad Shindle led off the home half with a base hit to left field and was replaced by pinch-runner Chris LePine, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Ceriani. Phil Thompson followed with a base hit through the left side of the infield, but LePine was thrown out at the plate by T.J. Soto to quell the rally.

Shayn Holbrook (4-2) pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the win for Winnipeg and Oscar Montero closed out the game to earn his league-high seventh save of the season. T-Bones’ second baseman Chad Hill enjoyed a strong night in the defeat with a double and his first home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field in the fifth. Kansas City's Matt McClellan (3-1) pitched the final three innings and was tagged with the loss.

Wednesday night’s game was anything but a slugfest early on as the two teams combined for just three hits through the first four innings. In particular, T-Bones starter Jon McDonald held the Goldeyes offense hitless through 14 consecutive at-bats from the second inning to the start of the sixth. Similarly, Winnipeg starter Steve Murray limited the Kansas City offense to just one hit through four innings and had retired nine straight before the T-Bones took a 3-0 lead in the fifth.

The Goldeyes bounced back in the sixth with a pair of two-run homers, by Greg Morrison and T.J. Soto, that gave Winnipeg a 4-3 advantage. The lead proved to be short-lived as the first three Kansas City batters reached base in the home half. Ray Brown drove in Eddie Pearson with a double over the centerfielder’s head before scoring what at the time was the go-ahead run on a fielding error by right fielder Wes Chamberlain.

But the Goldeyes quickly tied the score when Harry Berrios slapped a single to center field that plated Andy Stewart. The T-Bones and Goldeyes will conclude their three-game series Thursday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in a day game. The game’s first pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.

Game Notes: Winnipeg first base coach Tom Vaeth was ejected in the sixth inning following a close play in which T-Bones second baseman Chad Hill threw out Goldeye shortstop Max Poulin… After going scoreless through the first four innings, the two teams combined to score 10 runs in the next three…. Winnipeg designated hitter Harry Barrios went 1-for-4 with a single Wednesday night. He is just 20 hits shy of passing Nolan Lane to become the Northern League’s all-time leader.
